Copyright and fair use

Save Shorts you made yourself, or ones the creator has said are fine to reuse. Downloading someone else's Short to repost as your own can violate both YouTube's terms and the creator's rights, so treat saved files as personal copies unless you have explicit permission to share them further.

Telling Shorts apart from regular videos

Shorts and regular YouTube videos use different URL patterns (/shorts/ versus /watch?v=), but both work fine here — if you paste a regular video link by mistake, it still downloads correctly, just in its original landscape or square format instead of vertical. There's no need to check which type a link is before pasting it.

Is it safe to use?

No — a Short stays up under the same rules as any other YouTube upload, tied to the creator's own decision to keep or remove it, not some shorter built-in lifespan. If a Short disappears, it's because the creator deleted it or YouTube removed it for a policy reason, the same as would happen to a full-length video.
